10 tips for clients in criminal proceedings – New Year’s edition

31/12/2024

Criminal proceedings can be one of the most challenging situations a person may face. They often bring not only legal concerns but also stress, uncertainty, and fear about the future. In these moments, staying calm and composed is essential. To close the year, I've prepared ten tips to help you navigate these circumstances. These insights come from my experience and are shared with a touch of humour – because even in difficult times, it's important to hold on to optimism.

1) Think before you speak – silence can be golden (unless we agree otherwise)

Don't disclose everything you know (or don't know) to the police until we've discussed it first. Your own words could become evidence against you.

2) Your lawyer is your best friend
Share everything with me. Yes, absolutely everything. It's much better for me to hear the critical details directly from you in private than for the investigator to reveal them during an interrogation.

3) Avoid surprises
Surprises are great for Christmas with your family – not for your lawyer during a criminal proceedings.

4) If you don't know, say so
You're not obligated to answer every question an investigator asks. Saying "I don't know" or "I don't remember" is far better than guessing or speculating.

5) You can't bribe the law (and you shouldn't even try)
Attempting to "resolve" things unlawfully could lead to a new criminal case. And we want to minimize the number of cases you're dealing with.

6) Keep calm, even if things look bad
Most problems have solutions. It's crucial to maintain a clear mind and stick to a consistent strategy.

7) Avoid creating further problems
Don't try to "fix" things on your own. When you're involved in criminal proceedings, avoid doing anything that might worsen your situation.

8) Don't hesitate to ask questions
If something isn't clear, ask. It's better for us to discuss all possibilities together than for you to take a step that complicates your case.

9) Be open to teamwork
Your defence is a team effort. When I suggest specific steps, they're based on my experience and designed to help you. By working together, we can increase the chances of achieving the best possible outcome.

10) Enjoy the upcoming year – and stay calm
New Year's Eve is a time for reflection and fresh starts. Even if you're in a difficult situation now, we're working together to help you move forward.

Bonus:
And if you ever feel like all hope is lost, give me a call. Even on New Year's Eve – your defence doesn't take a holiday :-)

I'd like to express my heartfelt thanks to all my clients for their trust and cooperation throughout this year. Each case has been an opportunity to help you overcome challenges and find the best solutions.

Wishing you health, happiness, and peace of mind in the New Year. May 2025 bring new beginnings and positive change!
